Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains spatially gridded average monthly and annual maximum temperature for the climatological period 1963-95. Distribution of the point measurements to a spatial grid was accomplished using the PRISM model, developed by Chris Daly of SCAS/OSU.
Purpose:
Display and/or analyses requiring spatially distributed monthly or annual maximum temperature for the climatological period 1963-95.
Supplemental_Information:
There are many methods of interpolating climate from monitoring stations to grid points. Some provide estimates of acceptable accuracy in flat terrain, but few have been able to adequately explain the extreme, complex variations in climate that occur in mountainous regions. Significant progress in this area has been achieved through the development of PRISM (Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model). PRISM is an analytical model that uses point data and a digital elevation model (DEM) to generate gridded estimates of monthly and annual maximum temperature (as well as other climatic parameters). PRISM is well suited to regions with mountainous terrain, because it incorporates a conceptual framework that addresses the spatial scale and pattern of orographic processes. Temperature was modeled monthly. An annual grid was produced by averaging the monthly grids.. A Gaussian filter was applied to increase the resolution of the grids from the base resolution 15 arc-seconds (~450 m) to 7.5 arc-seconds (~225 m). This filter is a modification of the Barnes filter (Barnes, 1964), originally adapted by Dr. Stephen Esbensen of Oregon State University, and later modified for use here by Wayne P. Gibson, also of Oregon State University.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
All data were based on the same averaging period (1963-1995). Similar quality assurance procedures were used with all input data sets.
Completeness_Report:
Point estimates of maximum temperature originated from the National Weather Service Cooperative Stations (COOP). All station data were subjected to quality control checks by the Spatial Climate Analysis Service.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The horizontal accuracy of the DEM is expressed as an estimated root mean square error (RMSE). The estimate of the RMSE is based upon horizontal accuracy tests of the DEM source materials which are selected as equal to or less than intended horizontal RMSE error of the DEM. The testing of horizontal accuracy of the source materials is accomplished by comparing the planimetric (X and Y) coordinates of well-defined ground points with the coordinates of the same points as determined from a source of higher accuracy.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
A RMSE of 7-meters or less is the desired accuracy standard. A RMSE of 15-meters is the maximum permitted. A 7.5-minute DEM at this level has an absolute elevation error tolerance of 50 meters (approximately three times the 15-meter RMSE) for blunder errors for any grid node when compared to the true elevation. Any array of points in the DEM can not encompass more than 49 contiguous elevations in error by more than 21 meters (three times the 7-meter RMSE). Systematic errors that are within stated accuracy standards are tolerated.
