- Abstract:
- Grids of 1961-1990 Mean Minimum Monthly Temperature over the months of September-December produced with the PRISM modeling system served as the base maps for the calculation of maps of 1961-1990 Mean/Median/Extreme date of first 32F temperature in Autumn
- Purpose:
- Display and/or analyses requiring spatially distributed Mean/Median/Extreme date of first 32F temperature in Autumn for the climatological period 1961-90.
- Supplemental_Information:
- Using station data obtained from the National Climatic Data Center, non-linear, US-wide regression functions relating mean minimum monthly temperature over the months of September-December to mean/median/extreme date of the first freeze in Autumn were created. These functions were applied to the mean September-December minimum temperature grid to produce "first guess" grids for mean/median/extreme date of the first freeze in Autumn. The residuals between observed and regression-predicted mean/median/extreme date of the first freeze in Autumn were calculated for all stations. These point residuals were interpolated to a grid using inverse-distance weighting. Any Julian date less than 212 (July 31) was set to 212, and date greater than 377 (January 12) was set to 377. The residual grids were then added to the first guess grids to obtain the final grids for mean/median/extreme date of the first freeze in Autumn. Masks denoting areas of sporadic freezes (<50% of the years with a freeze) no freezes (no freezes in 1961-90 period) areas were created. These were created by using station sporadic freeze data. The sporadic and no-freeze masks were applied to the mean and median freeze date grids. The no-freeze mask only was applied to the extreme freeze date grid. A Gaussian filter was applied to increase the resolution of the grids from the base resolution 2.5 arc-minutes (~4 km) to 1.25 arc-minutes (~2 km). This filter is a modification of the Barnes filter (Barnes, 1964), originally adapted by Dr. Stephen Esbensen of Oregon State University, and later modified for use here by Wayne P. Gibson, also of Oregon State University.
